Can You Put A Wedding Dress in The Washing Machine?

Wedding Dress Dry Cleaning in Edmonton

The wedding day is one of the most special days for every woman, and so is everything related to that day. You take a long time to finalize your lovely dress for your BIG DAY and make sure it remains at its best for as long as possible. You’ll definitely want to preserve your wedding dress. But after all the makeup traces, food stains, and blackish-brown layer on the bottom or train of the dress, cleaning the bridal gown after THE day can be daunting. Most women rely on dry cleaners to get rid of even the toughest of stains. But there are some women who choose to clean their wedding dress on their own, that too in the washing machine.

Is it safe to wash your bridal gowns in the washing machine? Believe it or not, but you can put your wedding dress in the washing machine in most cases. If your gown is made of silk or is heavily embellished, you must refrain using the machine. If not, washing machines provide a high success rate. Your gown won’t be ruined but will be wrinkled after being washed and will need to be steamed or pressed.

Let us look at how you can wash your wedding dress at home, in your washing machine.

  • Take all the tags off your gown along with the plastic tag holders. These little plastic pieces can get stuck to dress and rip it.
  • Lay your gown on a flat, clean surface in a brightly lit room. Look the dress over thoroughly for any spots, stains, and residue of dirt.
  • Place a piece of paper towel under the stained layer of your dress, so the stain doesn’t transfer to the second layer. The paper towel should absorb the stain, so it doesn’t transfer onto other layers.
  • Apply the stain remover then use a wet towel to gently pat the stain out. Don’t rub the stain remover into the dress because your dress is fragile and may tear.
  • Make sure to turn the gown over and do this to the back as well.
  • Now, turn your gown inside out and put it in your washing machine. Turning the gown will keep the beads and embellishments safe from getting stuck in the drum or being pulled off.
  • Put half a scoop of mild detergent, set your washer to the gentle cycle, and start the washer.
  • When the washer is done, remove your gown out, turn it right side out and hang it to dry. DO NOT put your gown in the dryer as the dryer can pull off the embellishments.
  • Let the dress dry naturally and then straighten it with the help of a steamer. You can also give your dress to a press professional so that they can straighten your dress perfectly without causing any damages to it.
  • If any stains are still present, repeat the procedure.

Always use the front loading washing machine to wash your bridal gowns as anything with an agitator will rip your gown. However, there are chances that you may make some mistakes while cleaning your wedding dress and it can get damaged. Also, washing your wedding dress all by yourself can be a tedious task. Therefore, it’s recommended you give it to a professional wedding dress dry cleaner. The professional dry cleaner will ensure your dress is clean as before without any harm to your beautiful gown.
